Inspiration is a very important thing for every craftsman, because you can’t create without an idea. With the little experience I have I must say that it is hard to find some inspiration, but I’m sure about one thing, nature is full of inspirations, especially in spring when everything blossoms. So the inspiration for today’s necklace was nature itself, specifically speaking, one particular beautiful insect – dragonfly.
Many of us, who live and work in cities like to spend their time outside, just to forget, even for a moment, about the omnipresent monstrosities of the city: walls, cement and asphalt. I adore nature a lot, I rest in the bosom of it, I like admiring it, and nature is the one which inspires me. Even if there are some critics of spending time outside saying: “ Nature, phi! Ticks, mosquitos, sand flies, ants…. Yes, that’s a real pleasure!”, I won’t change my mind about it. I’m not denying the fact that nothing is perfect and sometimes you just can’t avoid some things, however there are many means to fight the insects and anyway, it’s a small price to pay for all the marvelousness that nature offers.
In the world of craft it often happens that there are periods, sometimes hours, sometimes days and sometimes even months, when there is no impulse for creating. In my short craft career I experienced such a moment once, I wrote about it in the post Easy come easy go. It was during the autumn-winter seasons, when you suffer from the lack of inspiration the most. It is dull, gloomily and pouring and of course you can find a motivation also in such conditions, cause why not? However, spring and summer seasons are the ones, which are colourful and provide me with many more stimuli to create.
So what is it that inspires me, when the nature starts the vegetation process?
- I’m still looking for it around me, I walk, take photos, observe, not only nature but also other places I’m currently in. A colouring, a form or a shape can inspire me and it can happen in the shop with cosmetics, in the hardware shop or in the greengrocer’s. We can find th einspiration everywhere, we just have to see.
- And if not there, where? Nowadays it is quite obvious – on the Internet. You will find there a lot of creators showing their work, those amatour ones and those professional ones. So go and inspire yourself, but do not copy! That’s not the point …
- I have to mention also about the press. It has changed a lot in Poland lately, we can find some magazines about craft and handmade things, full of inspirations and amazing photos. I have to admit that I bought only a few issues of Beading Polska magazine, because I reach out to newspapers only as a last resort. However, you can find something interesting in Mollie potrafi, Crafty or Beading Polska (the last one is for the fans of beads and beading). All of the titles are issued in Poland, but I’m sure there are many counterparts of them in your country.
Please do share your experiances with the inspiration or lack of it and leave a comment.
And now let’s move to our main point. The necklace with a dragonfly was created… for a long time, I’m not even sure how long it was, because in the meantime I was working on a few other projects and I postponed finishing my dragonfly until it grows on me or I on it. But it wasn’t due to the lack of inspiration, quite the contrary, I had the idea, but I felt it wasn’t it, until, after a few thought battles, it was to be started again. In fact, when I start a project I always, more or less, know how it will look like, I make a sketch….the more or less sketch as I have never done detailed drawing of my project on a paper. There are a lot of things that change during the work, colours, shapes, edging, for example today’s necklace, the edging was supposed to be dark green, but it turned out to be gold. At the beginning it was supposed to look a bit different, but the pattern and colours changed. As always I embroidered it on a felt, bead by bead, minute by minute, I still cannot believe, how much time it takes to bead 🙂 I used Nihi beads, they are quite irregular and toho 11/0 and 6/0. The colours are shades of green, but also gold, pearl peach and ecru.
While working on my dragonfly necklace there was a challenge announced on one of the internet portals – Szuflada. Up to now I have hears about different challenges, but I observed, admired the projects, however never took part in them myself. Not sure why, maybe because of the pressure connected with the deadline or momentary lack of inspiration or maybe because I felt not good enough. It’s time to change it! The topic of the challenge is insects, dragonfly is an insect, all correct, so I put it forward. Wish me luck!
And now it’s time to have a look at my dragonfly:
